Railway Cycle Trail

From Ballinamore old railway station follow this new cycle trail along the original route of the Cavan Leitrim railway towards Aughawillan. This cycle route provides access to a rich variety of landscapes including bogs, drumlins, lakes, and woodlands with views towards the foothills of the Sliabh an Iarainn mountains (Mountains of Iron). At Kildorragh, 2 kms from the town is the site of an old water reservoir, built in 1908 to supply up to 15,000 gallons of water per day to Ballinamore railway station.  Pass the quaint Corgar station house, nestled on a ridge between Bolganard and Corgar lakes, before absorbing the rural tranquillity of the Aughawillan countryside, childhood home to the renowned Irish Writer John McGahern. His book, Amongst Women, won both the GPA and the Irish Times Award, was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and was made into a four-part BBC television series. This cycle route provides a glimpse into the peaceful timeless essence of the writers work, the tranquil serenity of rural living and the charming character of long since closed rural railway lines.
